Relocating abroad comes with a lot of considerations for you and your family. The biggest of which is finding the right neighbourhood, the right home for all of you.
What is most important to you?
Take some time to consider what qualities you would like your new home to have. You want to make sure that you choose somewhere that suits your lifestyle not somewhere that you have to adapt to. For instance, are you looking for a lively ever-changing metropolitan city or would you like to come home to a home in a quiet suburb? Finding the right home comes down to research and before that you need to carefully consider what is most important to you and your lifestyle.
Try writing a list of requirements that your neighbourhood should have to help you narrow down your search to a few key areas before your start. Do you need a good school within any area you are looking for? To be near public transport? Would you like to be within walking distance of city life? Think about what you want so that you are looking only at properties that fit your needs.
Location, location, location
How happy are you with commuting? If you have a job offer already and/or know what school you would like to send your children to think about how long it would take you to get to work from any prospective homes. What is the most amount of time you would like to travel for? This is another way that will help you to narrow down your search to only the right homes for you.
Schools
You will want to make sure your child continues to have a quality education when you move abroad. It may be that the availability of spaces will limit your search to a certain school at the time of moving. How long would you be happy for your child commuting for? Is there a school bus option? This is another way to limit your search and should be considered during your home search to make sure that the area you chooses aligns with your school preference.
Seek the opinions of others
Perhaps you have family and friends living there already who would be able to offer you impartial advice. If not, try reach out to people who have relocated before you through expat forums. They should be able to offer you on the ground advice to help you in your final decision. Current expats and family and friends will be a great source of information to make sure that you find the right neighbourhood that has all or many of the important qualities you require in your new home.
