With effect from 18th of July 2017 landlords, apartment managers, hotels and other accomodation providers are required to report and provide notice to the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) when a foreign national moves or leaves their accomodation.
Authorities in Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, New Delhi, Pune and other jurisdictions require notification when foreign nationals arrive and take up housing accomodations. However, in Chennai, notice must now be provided for any foreign national who has departed since 1st of June. Notification should be completed by updating the departure link in the Form C portal online. This is the same online portal used to provide notification of arrivals. The authorities in Chennai appear to be enforcing the new requirement effectively, though the non-compliance penalties to businesses are not yet clear.
- Implementation time frame: effective immediately
- Who is affected: landlords and property managers hosting or renting to foreign nationals in Chennai
Chennai is the first authority to request reporting of a foreign national's departure but it is likely that this requirement will be extended to other areas. This new requirement forms an additional way for the authorities to better track foreign nationals and ensure compliance with immigration conditions. Crown will monitor developments and ensure that our clients are kept updated.
