Your relocation FAQs answered

Is your relocation day round the corner? Have you already organized your move and are geared up for the big day? It’s highly likely that you still might have plenty of questions on your mind!

At Crown Relocations, we have been relocating individuals and families all over the world for well over 50 years and we know, first hand, how many questions can come up in your mind before the move. To help put your anxieties to rest, we answer some of the most frequently asked queries before an impending relocation.

1. Can I pack my own belongings?
For security reasons, many countries no longer accept shipments that are packed by the owner. In addition, any damage incurred to items you pack yourself may not be covered under transit insurance. It is therefore advisable that a moving company is engaged to pack all of your household items and personal effects. At Crown, all the crew is professionally trained and have years of experience packing people's precious belongings.

2. Are any items prohibited from my shipment?
Though each country has its own restrictions, generally the following items should be avoided in the shipment:

 •  Liquor
 •  Firearms and ammunition
 •  Foodstuffs including herbs and spices
 •  Hazardous materials including adhesives, detergents, disinfectants, dyes, flammables, gas cylinders, insecticides, mercury thermometers, paints, photographic chemicals
 •  Items made from endangered animals
 •  Plants, dried flowers, bulbs, seeds
 •  Pornographic material
 •  Soil or sand of any kind
 •  Swords or any sharp objects

The above list is not comprehensive and your local Crown Relocations Consultant will be able to advise you on other prohibited items for your destination country.

3. Is there anything to prepare for the packing day?
Before the moving team arrives, do ensure that you:

 •  Dispose of any items you do not wish to take with you
 •  Clear out the garage, loft, and basement
 •  Disconnect and defrost refrigerators and freezers
 •  Drain washing machine
 •  Remove fixtures and fittings from walls

Remember to keep aside any item you will need to take with you when traveling including passports, money, travel documents, important paperwork, jewellery, valuables and suitcases.
