Moving alone is becoming increasingly common. In today’s financial climate where career progression is important and companies are global – young professionals are choosing to relocate alone to further their career. An international move often provides young people with excellent job opportunities, a chance to progress quickly and to move up the career ladder. Many also view it as a chance to experience a new culture, social life and hobbies. The trend for young people who move abroad alone is referred to as Generation Expat or Genxpat. They are usually young, single professionals who have the opportunity to relocate with work and they are forming expat communities around the world. Moving alone is quite straightforward as there aren’t added responsibilities of a spouse or family to support and this can make it quicker to complete a move. With any move there can be stressful moments and difficulties in settling in – but if you move to a city location and an office that is full of people of a similar age it should be fairly easy to make new friends. Enrolling to classes, social activities, volunteering or even picking up a new hobby are great ways to make new friends. Some cities will hold dedicated expat events which will enable you to meet young people who have also moved. There will be times where you miss family and friends back home, using social media apps such as WhatsApp and Skype where you can speak for free are good ways of easily keeping in touch.
